Glenfiddich Grand Yozakura completes the Grand Series
This limited edition whisky combines Scottish and Japanese flavours and will be available in limited quantities for the Swiss market from May 2023.
Of course, when you think of Single Malt Scotch Whisky, you first think of Scotland. But Glenfiddich is expanding the horizon with the «Grand Yozakura»: the 29-year-old whisky is first matured in oak casks and then receives a six-month finish in rare Japanese Awamori casks.
Glenfiddich Whisky meets Japanese Awamori
Awamori is a Japanese spirit made from rice. Awamori is normally matured in clay casks, with only a small proportion aged in oak casks. Glenfiddich was given the opportunity to acquire some of these rare Awamori casks and began experimenting with them.
These experiments resulted in a Single Malt Scotch Whisky that uniquely combines the finest flavours from Scotland and Japan.
«Awamori is very similar to whisky, with a wide range of flavours,» explains Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s Malt Master, adding, «The six-month finish in Awamori casks complements Glenfiddich’s smooth flavour profile, elevating the finish and taste to a new level and emphasising character and spicy herbal notes unlike anything I’ve experienced before in this range.»
The nose is dominated by ripe fruit and caramelised almonds, while the palate is rich, with notes of toasted oak, creamy vanilla and silky tannins. The exceptional taste is rounded off with nuances of spices, citrus and green apple, long-lasting oak dominates the finish.
Grand Yozakura – part of the innovative «Grand Series» by Glenfiddich Whisky
The Grand Yozakura is part of Glenfiddich’s «Grand Series», a range of outstanding Single Malts characterised by innovative and experimental cask finishes. The line has so far included:
– The Gran Reserva, a 21-year-old single malt that receives the finish in Caribbean rum casks.
– The Grand Cru, which is initially matured for 23 years in American and European oak casks and then finished in French cuvée oak casks.
– The Grande Couronne, a 26-year-old Scotch whisky that is finished for up to two years in special French cognac casks.
